First thing first, you can never be too cautious.

1. I would get your key finger printed and see what prints are on there.

2. I would hire a private investigator and survillance the person that return your key or finger prints found on the key fob

3. Install wireless cameras inside and outside of your car to catch the culprit in action.

4. When you leave your car unattended during the day, put a double sided clear tape on the inside of the door handle, this will help you catch finger prints as well.

5. Park your car near muddy places, police can track shoe prints.

6. Most important all, its quite spendy thought but it would be worth it. Call Knight corporation and see if they can install the new and improved "K.I.T.T" on your car (I heard it comes with a black communicator wrist watch). This would be the most sufficient way.

Just my 2 cents.

Now laugh! and have faith in people in the world.

As others have said, just be glad you got it back. Don't try to overanalyze what happened and why. There are more important things in life. Someone probably snatched it (as a joke maybe?) and enjoyed seeing you twist in the wind, searching high and low, offering a reward, etc. After all, how many elementary teachers or school staff can afford a Lexus?
