After you pay them, they don't necessary have to hold on to it. Now if they AGREED to it, which they might deny then your left with nothing. You can sue them or whatever, but it won't get you much.
Be nice and try to make them give you back some money.

BS! They probably just kept it for themselves! Find the guy that you told to hold it for you and confront him! Get that **** back or get some kind on compensation for it! What shop is this so i know not to go there!

I have a similar, but totally different case. We bought a matress last summer from Macy's, and they came in, delivered the new one, and took the old one. They were never supposed to take the old one. So my mom called corporate, talked to some lady, explained the situation how we never signed to have it taken out, and the lady simply said, "well what would you like?" And my mom said, "Money so I can buy another matress because we were going to use that old one still." Macy's said, "How much do you want?" My mom randomly said, "$900." And she got the check in 3 days.
Moral of the story, call who's ever in charge of the person you talk to, unless the person you talk to helps you out. Just work your way up the latter, but DON'T raise hell, just be kind about it, and you should be able to get what you want...
