Default Drag

You just stepped into the wonderful world of aerodynamics. Bottom line is drag increases exponentially as your speed increases. If you measure mileage under controlled conditions (level surface, no wind, etc) you'll see that driving at 70 and 80 mph translates into an average of a 5 to 10 mpg decrease over the magic 55 mph. That's equivalent to $6 or $7/gallon for gas based on the different mpg.

I've been forgetting to update this with another test I did on Saturday. I did my standard 60 MPH cruise control drive in Snow Mode with the windows up, but set the A/C to 85 degrees F. My average MPG was virtually unchanged at just below 36 MPG.

We need to get back to the double nickel and really save some gas.

Yes, I'm kidding, but it does work. 300 hp cars aren't exactly ever gong to be mileage champs.

Yes it is a 250, no hills in Houston

I don't believe HP really has all that much to do with MPG. It would be possible for a very small efficient engine to make great HP while also making great MPG. You've got to remember that HP is just a product of an engine being able to sustain torque up in the higher RPMs.
