I went with the 350 auto because the epa ratings were practically the same 18/25 for the 350 auto compared to 18/26 for the 250 manual. I should have done more research as I found out people were getting around 23-24mpg in the city and 28-32mpg for the 250 6spd manual whereas I get 18-19mpg in the city and 25-26mpg in the highway. oh well.

new 6sp manual?
There's a thread on Toyota Nation about the next generation of 6-speed manuals Toyota has developed and will be rolling out this next year.

I hold out vague hope that 1) the Tacoma derived manual in the current IS gets chunked and replaced by this new transmission. Don't wait for a full redesign of the car, swap the tranny now! 2) that it will be more lightweight and have better gearing to improve MPG (isn't the manual tranny IS heavier than the 250 automatic)?
Keep your fingers crossed!

Love my 6 sp MT. I test drove both the auto and manual, and decided to go with the manual with less options because I love the sportier feel of the drive. Yes the auto was silky smooth and quiet but that's not what I was looking for. I wanted a car that was fun to drive and something that I could engage and the 6 spd delivered. Yes, the shifting takes some getting use to and yes there is a little more noise associated with the manual, but the positves out weigh the negatives IMO.
