My Car is DESTROYED
#61
It's not a fixed dollar amount, it's a percentage of the car's value. Laws vary by state, but generally speaking, if the cost to repair exceeds 75% of the vehicle's value, the DMV will assign a salvage title.

Tell them you installed the Nav yourself... and cut the thing out of the car.
The ML alone will probably get you $800(if you get the correct J51 wire with it). And put stock wheels on there... your ISP mode wheels will fetch a $500 or so.
Grab the wood trim too, sports pedals illuminated sills, carpets, med kit! Make sure its totalled and grab what you can!
If you get another IS, these parts could be useful.
Oh and... glad that you are safe.

He should negotiate with the insurance company to get a brand new 2009 IS350 where he’ll drive off happy and never need all those parts.

had a recent rash of accidents (none of which we were at fault, except for being at the wrong place at the wrong time).. and it's not fun. body shop loves me . anyway, glad u (and me and my family) came away physically unscathed.
do tell us what happens next with the insurance when it is settled. gl! (hey, if they do total it, it might be worth keeping the car and removing lots of parts from it, seems like only front damage...)

Don’t you think the OP has enough on his plate right now? Why should he lie and commit a fraud to an insurance company and/or the state and risk making things worse?

The NAV+ML option costs $4000... how much is it worth on a used car? Here is a hint... $700. Its worthwhile to get those parts if you can(without having to buy the car back)
If you dont want to tell them that you installed it yourself... then just tell them you want it back for XYZ reason. It doesnt matter what the reason is.

It’s just that I can’t give legitimacy to any suggestion of cheating or committing a fraud on an insurance company. After all, as much as we like to dump on them, they are a business and if the car is totaled they have salvage rights to recoup some of their loss. Should they get less than what it should be worth, we all suffer vis-à-vis future insurance rates. And we all know they’re high enough already, perhaps due to this sort of thing.

Well, you’re right. He’s going to have to come up with some more cash to get a ’09.

Its YOUR car and your parts until it is deemed a total loss. Let the insurance company know you are taking some of your parts and then take them(it they dont make a big stink out of it). Its not fraud.
Seriously, what do you think the value difference is to the insurance comany on an IS350 with NAV/ML vs one without it? A couple hundred at most. If they take that out of your settlement.... so be it. Its still worth more to you(Ebay or Spares).
I bet you would like to have that extra Nav screen if something fell on yours.
