Trap/cage is the best way to catch it. Trust me, I have caught more than 20 cats and six rats this way.

This thread reminded me of the UB40 song, "Rat in my Kitchen." Simply download that song and play it loud in the garage. The rat will leave asap. UB40 has that effect on living things.
