Question Fuel in my oil & check VSC!

Giving this another try as I posted in another VSC thread but did not get much response.

This is the second time I'm having this issue, first time the dealer changed the oil and flashed the ECU (approx. ~6 months ago & 6k miles ago). Recently my VSC & CEL has turned on again. I checked the oil level and smelled fuel odor on the dipstick. I pulled the OBDII codes and they were again P0172 & P0175. The first one says the engine is running too rich, I forget what the second one means. Also, I did not mess with anything in the engine bay, nor do I have any engine mods.

My observation, the combination of recent low temps and my short commute (3.5 miles, I know, I should walk/ride a bike...) is possibly causing this to happen. My car is now out of warranty (ODO: 53k miles), so I'm left to wonder if I can still bring it in under "power train warranty" also since the first time I brought it in, it was under full warranty and it was the same exact issue which I guess did not get fixed.

Right now I'm just extremely confused why there would be fuel in my oil. Could it be a defect or something else? I don't understand engines very well so if anyone could help explain I would much appreciate it.

Any suggestions? Lobux? Anyone?

You're still under powertrain warranty and Federal emissions warranty. P0172 is enough for the Federal warranty. So, take it back and have it repaired.

Why there is fuel in the oil is a great question. There is very little opportunity for this to happen unless the injectors are spraying WAY too much fuel and it's washing down the cylinder walls.

**EDIT**
From TSIB EG007-06 which applies to your vehicle.
Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Lexus Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
This has been updated March 26, 2007. Not sure if you've had your work done since then, but this is the latest from Lexus.

Thanks Lobux! That is great information, I will call up the dealer and setup an appointment asap. I actually had my car in only 6months ago for this same problem, so it was after that date. But I'm not sure if they performed that TSIB which you mentioned. When I get home today I will check to see on my last visit dealer receipt if this TSIB is listed. But I just remember reading on it that oil was changed and ECU was flashed with the latest s/w which seems like I had this TSIB done but the problem persists.

Do you think there would be any long term effects from this?

Probably not. I'd ask a lot of questions about the repair though since it didn't work the first time. I'd also ask if there will be any extended warranty as a result of this problem recurring.

I just looked at the paper work at home and it stated the dealership performed the EG002-07. I looked this up and it looks similar to the TSIB you suggested, but this one fits my VIN.

From this I'm assuming its really the same TSIB just with more cars affected. I will have to make an appointment and see what they say/do. Thanks for your help.

I talked to my service advisor and he said I'd have to bring it in for them to look at it, which I will do sometime next week. As far as the fact that I'm smelling fuel in my oil, he kinda blew it off saying "its a product of combustion". I thought combustion was supposed to burn the fuel...lol...but maybe he meant that due to my car running so rich the combustion is not burning it all and somehow it gets to the oil. Anyways, will give update in a week or two when car gets checked out.

Quick update for anyone who cares, for the past week or so, I have been driving my car longer distances and the CEL & VSC lights turned off on their own yesterday. I still have a bit of fuel smell in the oil however. I'll need to change the oil asap but I decided not to bring the car in to the dealer since the dealer is quite far for me. In any case, we have to 80k miles for powertrain warranty so there's still time if anything happens again. (crossing fingers)
