My Spare Key is Dead after a Week
Hey fellas
Long story short, I've had the low key battery warning on my dash for a long time now. And it finally came to bite me in the *** on Saturday night when i was out. hahah . Anyways I couldn't figure out how to unlock the car, i tried stickin in the key through the slot underneath the door handle but I didn't know the plastic popped off. Anyways I got a ride home and came back with my spare key, started the car and left. I wasted so much time doing that but anyways i learned now.
I've been using the spare for about a week now until I get time to change my battery on my normal key. However today, the same problem, I go inside my car and the key is not detected. After about 2 mins i see a green light and i started my car. I have noticed that when i turn off my car even with this key, that I've been getting a low key battery warning as well.
My question is, should a brand new spare key's battery be dead already or is there something wrong with my car?
Perhaps both the batteries have drained over time. My car is an 06. November of 05 built time i think.
I am supposed to go to the dealership in the morning but I want to enjoy my day of sleeping in, so hopefully I can go to radioshack and pick up a 1632 battery.
or would it be better to go get it inspected by the stealership?

The battery in the spare key is active and powering the electronics in the key even though it is sitting in a drawer at home. So, coupled with that and the fact that a battery will self-discharge over time, yes you could have problems when you use it after an extended period. Especially since you will tax the battery once the spare key starts "talking" to the car. Simple solution is to replace the batteries every three years. And make sure to use a brand name such as DuraCell or Ever-Ready. You can pick them up at Wal-Mart in the photo section for about $1.99 each if you are comfortable changing the battery yourself. No need for the dealer.
