i have factory navi so i wouldnt know where to put it 
but... if u dont have a radar detector just suction cup that biatch to the windshield. the ashtray is kinda low unless you tilt it up towards u or something? kinda unsafe
to look down while driving

The suction cup solution is poor for two reasons:
1) It's worst for visibility than using the flat area right above the center stack with a friction mount
2) It'll eventually leave tell-tale marks on the windshield telling people "I HAVE A GPS HIDDEN IN MY CENTER CONSOLE- BREAK INTO ME!!!" which is another pitfall the friction mount solution solves.
