so i started the car and stepped off and let my buddy drive it around the parking lot for a while. I know a warning shows up saying something about "keys not detected" or something like that. will anything happen if the car drives off too far/or too long without the keys inside? I heard that the car will shut off. any truth to that?

nope thats not true...ur car can still be drive w/o ur key inside....get a LOW JACK!

Once started the car will go until one of two things happens: 1) Ignition is manually shut via push button, or 2) car runs out of gas. No key needs to be anywhere in the vicinity of the automobile once started.

Your car is running--it's no different than a car sitting there idling with the keys in the ignition. Just don't leave your car running and walk away, and you'll be fine.
