The only reason I can think of is the ES looks kind of fugly compared to the IS.
Umm--because the ES rides like I'm driving my living room sofa down the street. Which is fine if that's what you want--it's not for me. If all you want is speed, you can buy a G8.

Probably because it is one.

They're built on the same platform.

It's the only non-truck Lexus built on a Toyota platform anymore.

I have an IS 350 and got a loaner ES from the dealer. I didn't like it at all. I felt like an old man in it. No offense to any ES owners

1. It's FWD.
2. The ES shares components with a Toyota vehicle, the IS is unique, no Toyota sister.
3. The IS interior looks awesome, very sporty yet luxurious.
4. The IS is a head turner, i think out of all the sedans offered right now, it has the most aggressive styling and it's more unique than any sedan in the same class.
5. The ES is an all around comfortable 'family' car, the IS has virtually no backseat, unless your passengers are under 10 years old.

The ES is a boat, but appears to be better put together than the IS (IME with 3 or 4 ES loaners)

I am old, but, I still like the IS350, after driving the ES350 loaner for over a week.

what turned me off about the ES was that it was camry and that it was front wheel drive, but as soon as i got an 09 ES loaner all of that went out the window. smooth, quiet, solid, great parts fit/finish and roomy. i did feel like an old man though lol

LOL. IMO you have the question backwards.

Why would anyone buy an ES over an IS? Other than space concerns... I dont know.

The ES is A LOT nicer than a camry, even if they share the same frame, engine and transmission.

The problem with the ES, is
A) Doesnt look as good as the IS or GS.
B) Floats like my old 88 Lincoln Continental, and the steering is not as responsive.

The demographics for this ES model is different than the IS owners.

The ES has few benefits vs drawbacks when chosen over the IS but that is my opinion. The IS is nimble and has agility whereas the ES doesn't. The reason why I bought the IS wasn't because I wanted a Lexus. It was because I wanted the IS. The reason why people get the ES vs the Camry is because they wanted the "Lexus". It is the exact same reason why my previous car was an Integra. I bought it beacuse I wanted the Integra and not because I wanted an Acura.

IMO, I'd purchase a Acura TL over the ES if I wanted the FWD and the room for the same amount of cash. If I needed a Lexus and room, for the price of an ES, I'd get a pre-owned lease program return GS instead.

Out of all the cars in the Lexus lineup, the ES takes the largest dive in resale value too since the demand isn't there for this model.

One of the largest benefit of owning the ES over the Camry is the ES is made in Japan vs the US built Camry but ES owners don't even think about stuff of this nature.

In a nutshell, driving the IS makes you feel like the vehicle is always in your control. Driving the ES feels like you are trying to drive from the passenger's seat. It has ~270 hp but the car doesn't feel like it has the control for it.
