Oem wheel crack with popped tire, common?
On the freeway last night, my tire popped, and as I was trying to get off the freeway because there was no shoulder, I notice that the ride is getting bumpier and bumpier. Car didn't spin out or anything, so I was pretty safe. By the time I make it off and see it, the wheel is cracked on two of the spokes and one side where the tire popped has a nice flat section on it. Happened at 3:00 AM. Waited until 4:30 AM for a tow truck with Lexus Roadside Assistance, never showed up. I ended up changing the spare tire myself, and sleep in the car because I was too tired to drive home. Woke up around 9:00 AM and then called them up again, and was able to get a flatbed tow truck in 15 minutes. On the drive to Longo Lexus to drop the car off, he said that he had seen similar things happening on Lexus and BMW's.
I'm wondering, is this really common amongst some of you guys? If so, this might be a pro to get some aftermarket wheels.
Talking to one of the sales guys at Longo though, he said it happens just because of how we have such low profile tires and its inevitable for wheel to get damaged with flat.
Also, have some of you guys been able to get run-flats for OEM wheels and how do you like them?
Thanks

oem rims are rarely forged..
have u recently gone thru potholes? sometimes, u may not notice.. but that creates a bulge in the sidewall. the internal structure/nylon steel belt of the tire has been compromised, leaving only the skin layer of rubber holding it. could have blown out the tire from that point on. that and the subsequent driving without tire may have busted the rim..
not saying it is or isn't, but there is still the possibility that the wheel may have failed..

On the Lexus website it says $2,450. My parents said that costs are fine and they're just glad that I'm alright and didn't lose control of the car...and they expect me to fully pay them back for it by end of summer.

That's still barely more expensive than what... stock 17, 18 that the dealer is charging you for?
