Default About to leave soon :( Questions on sale

Well, It's been one hell of a ride here. I'm getting married soon and buying a house at the same time. I need to get rid of some of my debt so that means getting rid of my ride BUT my wife to be drives the exact same car but a different color. Since really want a SUV I will be selling my car for a more cheapy car. I have a question about selling my ride:

1) Does Carmax do a good job in buying cars? I owe about $27k and have about 23000 miles on it. Body is in excellent condition. I am hopeing that Carmax can get somewhere near that price range.

2)Will trade-in be better? Thinking about getting a used 4Runner or a new Xterra.

I've heard that carmax is not a really good option, but I've never dealt with them personally

Good luck with your choice!

Carmax is good with your car. Brian231 did very well having them buy his car almost a year ago. I would search to see if they have a lot of your car, make/model, in your area. If not then it should be good.

Trade in you get the Tax Credit. Get the print out from Carmax and take it to the dealer and use that as leverage so you get that, if its more, and a the tax credit.

We did the same thing and I must say its nice to have the SUV and the car now. We use the SUV 90% of the time and my car sits in the garage.

Congrats on everything Lots of good stuff going on for you

Is that car tax credit a minimum of a $25k car purchase?

Carmax should be your last resort if you're desper to get rid of your ride. Dont trade in your car with them, just take the money and buy a car somewhere else cause you cant bargain with them.

Carmax usually pays more for cars than dealerships, for a number of reasons.

If you just need to sell it, that's a good place to go.

Like all dealers, Carmax is set up to make a profit from your vehicle. While they are known to give a bit more than the average dealer, it's still not a wise way to go if you are counting pennies. Selling your car privately should yield in the most money.

Just go up to CarMax and see what they will offer but I do not believe they will give you close to 27K for your car as they can get it cheaper at the dealer to dealer auctions. Good luck!

I would count on getting around 24K max from carmax. I just sold mine there recently and got 22K for IS250. They don't care too much about your nav either. So the best way to go if you can hold on to the car for a little longer is to try to sell it privately. Then check it out with carmax. I found the price at edmunds to be the closest carmax offered me. The dealership at trade in tried to lowball me and I kept saying no way. They reached within a couple hundred of carmax but I didn't go to carmax before. So the best order should be try to sell privately, get a quote from carmax and see what the dealers would offer at trade-in.

Well if you're looking for an SUV, you might as well trade in.

your tax credit will be for the amt they allow you on trade. if its an even swap then you pay no taxes. if the new SUV is more then you will only get taxed on the difference.

If your purchase is less then your car is worth on trade you still pay no taxes but you wont get any credit in addition to the amt of the sale of the new SUV.

are you leasing or purchasing the new SUV?
