Default Drastic price differences on 20K service by different dealers.

I'm over 20K miles so I called around the Lexus dealers in northern Jersey and New York metro area to get a price quote. I was taken aback by the price differences of the dealers doing the exact same service. The lowest and the highest price had a difference of $100! Just wanted to share the info..

One question, I also called a Toyota dealer and they said they can change the oil for $55. I figured I will have to go the Lexus dealer for the 30K service for a major service so why not just change the oil at Toyota until 30K. Any thoughts?

Assuming it's not an AWD car what it actually needs at each service-

Every 5k- oil change

Every 15k- Change cabin and air filter (you can do yourself in like 5 minutes)

Every 30k- Change brake fluid

Every 60- Change spark plugs.

Every 100k- Change coolant.

That's it.

Don't ever ask for "the X mile service" because they'll toss on a bunch of other useless crap and jack the price up 400%. Just ask for the actual work you need done.

NOTE!! If you change the cabin filter, please set the vent to recirculate. Otherwise, you'll break a plastic clip that will cost 1300 to replace.

can you buy the cabin/air filter online or is it better to just get this at the dealer?

The cabin filter that comes with the car is a carbon activated one...I have had no luck finding that OEM filter. I purchased the closest thing which was 87139-07010 ($25), which has no active carbon, though others claim it does. Mine looks like regular white filter.

The one Sewell sells (87139-YZZ08) is a POS, thin and flimsy...doesnt look like it will filter much.

I looked at the BreatheEasy one ($12) from Discount Autopart and Pep boys and it is similar to the OEM one I purchased above, alot better than the one Sewell sells. IS uses the same filter as the 07+ Camry and many other Toyota Cars.

As for engine air filter, invest in a K&N and the recharge kit, you will never have to buy another filter again. Just clean every 15k miles.

No mention of differential fluid? I'd say every 30K.

Coolant at 30K too, unless you like coring radiators. It's cheap, radiators are not. Be sure to bring your own distilled water as a dilutant. Most shops don't bother.

The OP has to inquire at each provider exactly what is included in the service schedule. Not all are the same. Most do the minimum, some are a little more aggressive, some even perform preventative maintenance.

The factory service manual says never. I'm gonna stick with that.

Again, the factory manual says 100k

This isn't the old red stuff that you change every 30k.

This is the pink SLLC stuff rated for 10 years/100k miles.

Can I get the cabin filter at pep boys/etc or only at the dealer?

there's nothing wrong with going to a toyota dealer to get your lexus an oil change. unless you know they have a bad rep and they do a S****y job like jiffy lube
