hello i am currently in the market of purchasing a IS X250 But idk what i want lol anyways this is gonna be my first car not counting my 1999 pontiac grand am that i had for 6months and it just broke down and too lazy to fix.. so i am looking into the IS anyways do u think i should start my car off with a 250 or a 350 does the AWD really help alot i live in NYC Queens, so i am just wondering is the car gonna have enough power for my first car.. ive been trying to pick up a 350 but when my father drove it he is like this car is too fast for u "you should start off something smaller and work your way up" so i really dont know i am looking to by a 2006 since my budget is only 23k probably pull off 25k but not hoping plus thats not including the tax in NY lOl.. so guys what should i start off first.. and the ppl with the 250 AWD why did u get the 250 AWD and why not the 350 ty

I got the 250 awd cuz it was the only thing they had on the lot lol.
Wished I could go back and get a 350 for basically same price what I paid for mine, or gotten a 250 for cheaper. AWD sucks, rides too high and no real omph when I feel like a ricer.
Main complaint is too much constraints for AWD when it comes to modding mainly due to wheels and drop, if you have a 350 the amount of money you save getting the more abundant and thus cheaper parts will pay for itself in terms of the 1k difference between a 250awd and 350.
The only good thing about the awd is the snow storm we had last year... like 2 of them lol. snow drifting is fun, going sideways down a 4 lane avenue was fun, then proceed to drive an hour home in unplow snow on high performance all season was a lot of fun as well, without having to worry too much about spinning out of control.

well im bought a AWD cause of the snow but you can still put some good snow tires on a 350 and will be fine. if you want HPS go with the 350 if you just want a daily drive 250 will do you just fine. With my AWD and winter season i couldnt be any happier to drive threw all the heavy snow without a prob. hope that helps and welcome to CL

Well, I test drove both cars, and coming from having owned a 560hp Chevelle & the Supra, I wanted something that could get out of its own way. The 250 just seemed a bit boring to me. No offense to 250 owners here! I understand the use for the AWD but I've lived in TX, AL, FL and now WA state, and there's no real threat for snowstorms and blizzards where I'll absolutely require AWD to get me out of a bad situation. I actually drove through about 3-4" of snow on my way up here north of Seattle, and I thought the traction control on the 350 more than helped me out to keep the car on the road.
Anyways, if it is your first real new car - dude, I kinda have to side with your pops. A 350 isn't what I'd call a "fast" car, but it is a car that I at a younger age (I dunno, what are you? 16? 17?) would probably find myself getting into trouble into. It's all about the level of maturity, and I can't speak to that given the fact that I don't know ya.
I sold the Chevelle for a DD, to invest and to save money, and the most I was looking to spend was about 25K as well. I found my '06 350 with 30K on it for $23K - honestly, I didn't really price the 250's. For the first real new car though, I wouldn't see a problem with a 250 man - I'd be pretty pumped to be honest. Like others have said, they only real 'downsides' (if you can call them that) are the fact that your wheel/tire options are a little more limited as are suspension options. OK, so what? Your insurance will be cheaper and you'll probably save a bit of coin in the gas mileage sector - which would matter a lot to me if I were still a new driver.

Just buy whatever you can afford. BTW be sure to check insurance premiums and if the car still has warranty because both those things can add up especially if it no longer has a warranty since things are pretty pricey to fix on these cars.

I test drove the 250 back in January and we opted to buy an TL instead for my wife. We both liked the IS250 but I though it lacked power and most places were asking $23-24k for a low mileage 06. Last month I decided to replace my Z06 for an E46 M3 and test drove a bunch of cars and really liked the IS350 instead. In the end I found one exactly the way i wanted for $25,500 (Nav + ML and sport) with low miles. So the deals are out there, I didn't have to look very hard.
