Default Is that little leather key protector necessary?

I just got my 09 IS250 and I'm loving it

They put a little leather protector around my two keys, but I think it makes it feel much bulkier in my pocket. Do you guys all use it? Will the key transponder get really scratched up by the other keys without it? Thanks.

I didn't even think of that. There shouldn't be an internal parts moving in the key though, so I think it should survive some drops on its own.

oh it will work if it gets dropped but I just despise having scratches on my stuff

the key to my VW is scratched to hell from getting dropped, it just looks atrocious.

If you have other keys the pouch will protect the remote. I've seen one without the pouch it's all messed up.

I use it, because as others have said it offers a modicum of protection and I like it. My wife also like her's for her ES. However, the pouch is not the same in all markets. Examples are - In japan they furnish a much nicer Key Fob cover than we get here. Sewell's sells it, I believe for something like $105.00. In Canada they do not furnish a key cover of any kind. So, I believe it's up to whoever makes the decision in the selling country as far as standard equipment and optional equipment is concerned.

I took that piece of crap off years ago. I agree it adds considerable bulk to the key when in your pocket - and I've dropped my key dozens of times and still no scratches. Its pretty durable.

I took mine off the second I got it. Looks ugly, bulky, girly. Your remote won't break if it drops and even if it was to get scratched it would look 10x better than with the case on.

it actually protects the key very well. I had my keys on the ground when i was playing basketball and i didnt notice the sprinklers turned on and soaked them pretty bad. The keys actually worked after and i think the leather helped protect/soak all the water.

Well said. I took mine off too, as it adds weight and bulkiness. I've dropped the fob several times and it won't scratch.
What Lexus really needs to do it make the standard surface more grippy or rough. It's too smooth and slippery, causing the loss of grip when you are fumbling for keys. Audi, BMW, and other fobs come with a textured surface.

i use it for added re-enforcement because i fear the valet key would come off... and then resulting losing transponder...

so, when i have it in the key ring, it goes through the valet key and the case itself...

I took off the case that the dealer gave me. I do agree it does add a lil' more bulkiness, but from my first IS key fob.....the scratches was bothering me like crazy because of my other keys. So I got this as a gift from my aunt in Japan as a birthday present.

This pic came off Hapaboy's post, but my case looks exactly like this.
