I was merging onto the exit ramp today (less than 1 minute from work) while this big double hauler dump truck was trying to merge onto the freeway. Being the nice guy that I am, I let him out. As soon as he gets out, a big rock the size of a quarter strikes my windshield... A simple toot of the horn would have sufficed, instead, I now have a 4 inch long crack on the top of my windshield.
The rock struck about an inch from the top edge, and the crack extends directly downward for 4 inches. It has stopped, but I think it will extend out... What should I do?
I have mercury auto insurance, in San Diego.
Should I get the whole thing replaced? Should I get it filled? How will it look once filled?
grrrrr....
just went to check it again and it has curved and is now longer than 7 inches...

Hey jewel, so sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately, a crack that size is most likely going to need a full replacement. The big question is will your insurance pay for a OEM Lexus windshield or something aftermarket, as there's a huge price difference and insurance companies are notoriously "cheap" when it comes to replacement. There are several threads here on CL that discuss this, but just make sure the work is done to your complete satisfaction. Windshield replacement often is sub-contracted and there are a lot of lousy glass installers out there.
Best of luck, I'm sure that karma is on it's way!

Welcome to the club - I had this happen in the last three months to both my Lexus and my WRX.
The WRX got hit on the top of the windshield - half on weather stripping and half on the glass. The crack has since shot almost all the way across the window.
The Lexus got hit a week later about 1/4 in below the top. the crack went down about six inches made a u turn and has since stopped growing. Both were on the the passenger side about 12 inches from the passenger edge. ![Crying](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/Peace.gif)
I feel your pain X2.

deductible is 500
dealership wants 2,000 for it, but also recommended a place
the recommend place wants 360
safelite wants 185+ molding
guess i'm going to go with safelite =/

If the rock came out of his truck and you have the license plate number, then his insurance will cover it. If not, then of course you have a decision to make about your own insurance/windshield replacement, but at least in the future you might be able to tag their insurance. IMHO there are too many people everywhere that aren't cleaning out their trucks (or properly securing loads) prior to hitting the pavement.

wish I knew that before... i totally could have gotten his license plate number
safelite guy just showed up, said he had to replace moldings which would be another $150. I ended up just calling the dealership recommended guy and he's going to do it for 365.
lame =/
