With so many cars having DRLs for safety reasons, and most people knowing about DRLs, I don't think any one "looks stupid" with them on. Many states have signs along the highways, "Lights on for Safety".
I personally would not disable a feature that increases my chances of being seen by other drivers who are playing with their iPods, cell phones, and talking to their best friends or kids, especially at twighlight or on cloudy days.

Even the NHTSA found no useful benefit to them in passenger cars (there was about a 5% benefit for them in trucks/vans)
Several countries that mandated their use actually saw accident rates and pedestrian deaths -rise- after the mandate went into effect.

i put mine on auto, however when i go into tunnels or what not, its seems to take a minute to turn on. by the time they're turned on, i'm halfway through the tunnel. ;/ but whatever, if i had to turn them on manually, i'd forget. hahaha.
