It's actually pretty debatable if they're doing anything positive for safety or not.

Even the NHTSA found no useful benefit to them in passenger cars (there was about a 5% benefit for them in trucks/vans)

Several countries that mandated their use actually saw accident rates and pedestrian deaths -rise- after the mandate went into effect.

i put mine on auto, however when i go into tunnels or what not, its seems to take a minute to turn on. by the time they're turned on, i'm halfway through the tunnel. ;/ but whatever, if i had to turn them on manually, i'd forget. hahaha.

I, too, put mine on auto. Don't really have many tunnels or dark areas where I love, so it works fine.
