3rd Gen IS speculation thread
#706
just to confirm... Lexus is working on TT V6 and TT v8 (V8 in prototype testing in the TMG LS) and we hear around 400hp in the TT v6.... I hadn't heard/seen anything on the TT I4, but it does make sense.
I think with the new pending cafe ratings.. most manufacturers will be looking at turbos again...at Least Toyota/Lexus has a history of success.. they and their subsidiaries are still offering turbos in other countries

As far as going turbo, it was only a matter of time. I thought I read somewhere that Toyota acknowledged that they missed the boat on putting turbos in their cars because they were focused too heavily on the hybrids. Although the hybrids have been successful for the brand in many ways, it certianly doesn't "feel" the same as driving a more powerful engine that's more efficient. Remember, BMW's N55 engine generates 300 hp and 300 lbs/ft of torque and still gets 33mpg on the freeway. Certianly with the gains in efficiency that we've achieved over the last couple of years with turbos, I'm sure that it's accurate that Toyota is looking at turbo tech again. The last time they used it was for the MR2 Turbo and the Supra Twin Seq Turbo and those were reliable and powerful and fun. I think their partnership with BMW might be paying off in that Toyota might be getting some upated turbo knowledge to incorporate what they know with their own turbo experience.
I've said it before and I"ll say it again. I'm still waiting for the Supra to be reborn. I'd love to see a v-8 but I think if it is reborn, it'd be more realistic to see some sort of turbo v-6 or turbo in-line 6. The m3/4 is supposedly going to get 3 turbos and maybe one of the turbos will be electrically driven. Wouldn't that be awesome if the Supra has twin sequential turbos with a super small, electrically driven turbo to completely eliminate turbo lag?

Gonna have to disagree with you on that one Bam. This car is almost a miniature 4GS, if it was a huge jump from the 3GS like you said, it's definitely a huge jump from the 2IS.
It truly looks nothing like a 2IS.

No disrespect but that car is the 2nd gen IS. The only thing different is the front bumper. Whoever ps 'ed it, didn't really do anything special except put a more aggressive front bumper with their new spindle grill. The headlights are the same. the hood is the same. the doors are the same. the wheels seem a little more flush but otherwise, that is a 2nd gen IS with an updated F-sport grill. I like it and like I said, that should have been the mid-life cycle face lift.

It is obviously a photoshop and I was not referring to the doors and second half of the car as it's obviously a 2IS. I highly doubt that will be the case once the production model is out. I dont think this photoshop was done to show off the whole body, rather the front fascia.
What I am trying to say is that if they go with that FRONT. It is nothing like a 2IS. Hood is not the same though similar (look up the 4GS hood), headlights are not the same, mirrors are not the same, sideskirts are not the same, front bumper is no where near the same.
Now if this car is the actual car then yes I too would be disappointed because the windows, doors, pillars and trunk line are all the exact same.

I've done everything I can to describe/show the 3IS save for leaking the photos

Considering then we know what's coming, I'm stoked. But seeing this, the one thing the 2IS has is elegance for a compact luxury sport sedan. This chop just looks like a stubby little GS to me. No real beauty to it
