I wish they had a 2IS wagon like the 1IS.

I hope they'd make a special package or trim for the 2IS before they go to 3IS.

Also considering the way the world economy is right now I highly doubt they will be introducing a new IS anytime soon. Also remember they just recently released the two hardtop convertible. After spending all that money on R&D to develop that car I doubt they will be replacing it after just a two year run. They would want to milk it for all it's worth making it and the current 2IS 4 door run an even longer production run.

You won't see the 3rd generation IS unless theres a huge drop on the 2IS sales. It all depends on the general sales throughout the world. If people are still buying the car by 2012, the Toyota Co. would still be making this very same generation. However, they might make some minor changes such as headlights, tailights, bumpers, etc.

I hope they make a manual transmission option with a solid flywheel. Technology downgrade FTW

They're not gonna offer a manual.

In similar news they're also not going to offer a hand-cranked starter, drum brakes, or an 8-track player.

The redesigning of vehicles generally does not work that way. Once a new model is released, the company goes to work on the next one within a few months to a year's time. It's all planned out, written out, budgetted, and scheduled early on, being it takes years to come up with a tested and proven design ready for the public. This isn't something they can pull out of a hat within a year once sales start declining.

Lexus SC 1st gen was 92-2001
Lexus SC 2nd gen is 2002-present, remains in product for at least 2010

Lexus LS 2nd gen was 95-00 (6 model years)
Lexus LS 3rd gen 01-06 (6 model years)
Lexus LS 4th gen is 07-now and no suggestion it'll be a 5 year cycle.

Even the IS ran 98-05 for the 1st gen.

I dunno where you get that lexus runs 5 year cycles.

Based on all their other RWD cars the earliest you'd see a 3IS would be Model Year 2012
Maybe, maybe not. In this US entry level luxury segment (RWD, AWD, or FWD), half the other brands have brought out a new model every five years. The 3-Series, TSX/TL, and G35/7 are on this cycle and that is IS territory. The A4 had a major facelift for 2005, which some say was considered a new model after only three models years. The last gen IS was here (US) for five years (2001-2005). Same with the last ES. The SC and LS are more speciality cars or limited productions cars, which tend to follow a different structure. You are right about the GS, which was getting long in the tooth. Also, if you look at the Toyota family, the Corolla, Camry, and others (even the Accord, Civic, and SUV's) are on a five year track. The competitive segments are the ones redesigned the fastest. So the five year thing is not uncommon at all. It's today's target. I doubt Lexus will pull out of the pact and let other brands step up faster, but anything is possible. One last trend worth mentioning. In the past few years, Toyota has pulled a fast one by introducing a new model early in the year and calling it the next year's number (IE, 2007 Camry released in the beginning of 2006). Even yesterday, they announced pricing on the 2011 Camry, while the 2010 model has only been for sale for a few months. Same thing could happen for future Lexi, blurring the model year runs.
