Default Musty A/C Smell

Anyone know how to get rid of musty A/C smells? I tried spraying Lysol into the vent under the windshield and that worked only for a day. I also put in a new A/C filter. Where is the drainage pipe located under the car?

If you are still under factory warranty, take it to the dealer. There is a faulty drain valve on some ISx50 and if your A/C is smelling bad, it's probably a faulty drain valve.

It could be mold build up in the evaporator, if you run the A/C for a period
of time and then just shut off the fan (when you arrive at your destination
and turn off the engine), moisture remains in the evaporator and over time,
mold will develop causing the smelly sock syndrome when you run the fan or
A/C again.

Visit the dealer to check for mold and remove.

To prevent the smelly sock syndrome, remember to turn off the A/C and run
the fan full blast (make sure it's on fresh and not recirculate) for about 5
minutes before you turn off the engine or arrive at your destination. This
will help dry the evaporator. More air can go through if you have the windows down.

Wow. Two service bulletins for this one:

L-SB-0068-09 HVAC Odor (Replace the evaporator assembly - dash removed, A/C discharged, evaporator replaced - LOTS of labor)

AC003-07 HVAC EVAPORATOR DRAIN BLOCKAGE (similar to above - dash out, HVAC unit out, valve and packing replaced)

Both are quite a bit of work. Both are only good for 48 months or 50k miles. I would take it to the dealer anyway and ask about this.

if you take it into your local dealer and your not under warranty just talk to your service adviser and tell him your problem they might fix it under warranty still since it is a on going problem with the IS and GS...

Is the A/C on when you turn off the car?

Usually, condensation builds up within the A/C system causing mold.

There is an easy fix to this:

Turn off your A/C about two-three minutes before you exit the car. I like to turn the fan on at max with the A/C off to get rid of most of the moisture. This should help decrease the problem.

If the smell is still prominent when you start the car, I suggest turning on your heat at max temp and fan speed for about two to three minutes. That also helps "kill" the odor.
