OK, I admit I'm a "geezer". I remember before SUV's existed and when nobody had a pickup truck except farmers and those needing them for commercial businesses.

Everyone used cars to tow trailers -- sometimes very long and heavy travel trailers.

The movie "The Long, Long Trailer" came out in 1953 and I first saw it in about 1955 in my grandfather's theater, The Roxy, in Huntsville, Missouri. My job as a little kid was to hand my grandfather the next real for mounting in the projector.

The film made fun of people with no towing experience hauling huge travel trailers on winding mountain roads. It was funny then and it's funny now.

In fairness, most cars in the 50s and 60s in the US were both RWD and body-on-frame, both of which are a lot better for towing than the unibody FWD cars that were the norm for a "car" when everyone starting thinking trucks/SUVs were what you need to tow.

Not to say you can't pull a jetski with a Ford Focus or something.

You are absolutely right about body-on-frame (BOF) and RWD vehicles being better for towing really heavy loads. The current BOF Lexus LX for example has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds while the unibody FWD Lexus RX is limited to only 3,500 pounds / 1,500+ kg -- the same maximum that Lexus recommends outside North America for its unibody sedans.

The RWD and AWD IS, GS and LS are more suitable for towing than the FWD ES and HS.

This is pretty vague. If you think it's crazy that someone has installed a hitch on an IS, then I think YOU might be crazy.

did you have to make any cuts or drill holes to fit the hitch? will you be able run this with after market exhausts?

No drilling is required. A little trimming of the heat shield is necessary. See the attached installation instructions.

Aftermarket exhausts? It depends on how they are designed.

BJM711, can you post a shot of the underside when you find the time? Looks sweet. Definitely thinking about doing this.

Sorry, I don't have a lift to raise the car and therefore I can't get a photo from under the car. I was able to do the whole install without raising the car off the ground.
