So Im placing an order for some wheels today and the salesman tells me that the wheels I wanted were not available in a 40mm offset but in et35. He said they have a machine that can shave off 5mm to essentially create a 40mm offset.
How does this sound to you guys?
I've done some research and have read mixed thoughts. Some people say they have done it and have had no problems... Others say they have NOT done it but wouldn't feel safe.

It would all depend on the wheel. If it's thick enough in the hub area, sure. If it's thin, I'd be really nervous about it. 5mm is pretty significant.

Well if you shave your making the offset higher. When you add spacer you make the offset lower. If it is a 3 piece wheel you can change the offset by changing the barrels....
Most wheels are build to allow 5 mills to be shaved from the back. I don't recommend doing this on a cast wheel and I would check with the manufacture to see what kind of tolerances they build into their designs. It is very important you check with the manufacture to avoid the wheel from failing.

Sad to say I've done this in the past, way past. Back in the 90's when you really didn't get to choose what offset you wanted; you would have to order wheels from a BMW or Fox body Mustang to get a more agressive look. Anyway, the problem you may run into will be
#1) The machine shop doesn't take enough care to balance or center the wheel properly. The wheel will shake like crazy and may wobble.
#2) The guy running the machine doesn't take in consideration that the oil used to cut the metal ruins the finish on the wheels.
I've done this 3 times in the earily 90's and 2 out of the 3 went fine. But the 1 time I had problems it ended up trashing a set of new wheels. Never again.
Finder flares FTW or getting the wheel well flared 5mm will be cheaper. It doesn't sound like 35mm offset will be a problem on any Lexus I know of. What widths are you running and car?
