Guess what happens when you close your trunk w/ your key fob inside…

LOL!! Are you implying Lexus engineers did a survey and found out people who buy Lexus are idiots?
I'm a victim!! I still can't stop laughing when my wife drove my IS. She hits the start button, backs up and I wave good bye. Seconds later she yells, what is that beeping noise. I said fasten your seatbelt. She replied, it's on. Wheres the car key? Ooops, had the key in my pocket. LOL

I have done this numerous times with my golf bag. I take my keys out of my pocket and stash in a pocket of the golf bag before the round. In the parking lot after the round, the trunk gladly opens with the golf bag in proximity. Throw the bag in the trunk, close the lid, OOPS!!!! I have to try to remember to grab the keys BEFORE the 19th hole.
Seriously, there is one potentially fatal flaw (IMHO) in the design of this keyless system. It has been recently exposed by the floor mat recall. It is the fact that we can't turn off our engines in an emergency while running in gear without holding down the button for a few seconds. My wife, who is now the primary driver of our Lexus, is aware of this now. But, before the attention was drawn to this fact, she had no clue. Frankly, I didn't know either.

But to answer your question why....
I have a late model Benz with a more conventional key and I really don't notice any inconvenience versus the Lexus.
But the best answer to your question is all the threads on this keyless system (such as this thread with a slew of questions, problems, etc.), not to mention the fiasco with floor mats/sticking gas pedal and how to turn the stupid car off.

That's an interesting thought. Losing power steering/brakes is not that big of a deal. They still work. But, the steering column lock, that's a good one. Does anyone know if the steering will lock just because the ignition is off or does it require putting it into park as well?

And turning the motor off in neutral keeps the accessories on. I don't believe the steering column lock activates in this mode, also considering the vehicle may need to be moved (and steered) short distances.
