Uh...you're confusing two totally different features.

ECT-Power isn't the "overdrive off" button.

In, for example, a 4 speed automatic, 3rd gear is 1:1, and 4th is an overdrive gear for better mileage. Pushing OD Off disables use of that 4th gear. That's all it does. (if you're IN 4th at the time it'll downshift you to 3 of course).

ECT-Power changes the overall transmission behavior in a number of ways, but doesn't disable use of any gears.

There are cases where ECT power may lead to faster lap times...and it's not in a straight line. It's on some windy roads where the ECU is smart enough to hold gears through turns so you get instant acceleration without downshift delay coming out of a turn.

You gain time by avoiding that delay. Depending on how big the straightaways are between turns, you'll lose time due to non-optimal straight line acceleration (while in ECT power).

I don't use it necessarily because I'm trying to get from point A to point B through a windy course in time X. I enjoy the feeling of the car holding gears longer and not having downshift delay out of a turn.
