ML - Sound cuts out

I was on my way to work today, and the sound on my ML system cut out completely - no sound at all, and the volume **** and the steering wheel sound level controls stopped working. There was no indication on the Nav screen that I was turning the sound up or down. The CD continued to play, and I was able to change mode to FM, etc., but no sound.
The sound came back after I shut the car off and restarted it. I would expect this to happen if the amp overheated and needed to be shut down and powered back on, but I was listening to music at a pretty soft level on a 75 degree morning - nothing too stressful for the amp.
I searched this problem, and found everything from people having the amp replaced to the head unit replaced, with no definitive fix. Some people had it happen once or twice and it never happened again. Some had several HUs and amps replaced and are STILL having the problem.
Does anyone have a "final answer" to this yet? My car is 6 months from being out of warranty, and I know this is going to be one of those issues that can't be reproduced if I bring it in.

Update: same thing happened again today, and I drove it to the dealer while it was acting up. They confirmed the issue, and ordered a new ML amp.
Thanks for all the discussion!
