Can't you just look at the side of the tire and read what it says for pressure...for that particular type/style of tire?...er or is that tyre...lol!!

Usually the side of the tire will only give you a maximum pressure, which is going to be no where near where it should be set. Even if it did give a recommended pressure its just that, recommended. The contact patch will be affected by the weight of your particular car. The chalk test would be the easiest eay to find the optimal pressure for your tires on your car. Unless you have a tire thermometer and you want to measure temperatures across your tread.

Make sure the tires are at operating temp when you do the chalk test also. You have to account for a change in pressure as the temp goes up, although the few lbs it will go up probably won't affect it all too much.
