I think if u have 6k+ HID's I think that yellow gives more of a JDM contrast, 6k might look cleaner, but it's pretty common

get 5k that looks really good.. its just pure white. i think the output is better than 3k since 3k will make things appear more yellow.

to quote myself from another thread:

fyi, the "k" is a measurement of color temperature in degrees kelvin that determines the hue (read: gradation/variety of a color) of the light source.

(courtesy of xenondepot.com/jaguarforums.com)

as you move along the "k" scale curve from left to right, you'll see that there is an increase in light output, peaking somewhere between 2000k and 2500k. personally, i don't know why manufacturers don't use that color temperature, but from an aesthetic point of view i'm glad they didn't... but i digress.

the stock 4300k for the oem D4S bulbs for the 2is is right on the border between white and yellow, but has more light output than most popular D4S bulb temperatures (6000k/8000k/10,000k). however, for aesthetic's sake, the 4300 still has a hint of yellow, so you'll have to go with a higher color temperature to get that white/blue-ish tint. and of the popular D4S bulb temperatures, 6000k has the most optimal mix of color and useable light.

in short, i agree w/ L-S-D: for the best color/useable light mix, i'd go with 6000k.
as you can see from the posted pic, even the stock 2is color temperature of 4300k does not put out as much useable light as 3000k.

to sum up, 3000k for maximum useable light, 4300k to match oem 2is HID's, 6000k for (imo) the best color/light mix.

anything after that, and it's pure aesthetics.

It's good to see at least one other person out here [projectdna] who actually KNOWS something and doesn't go for the bright, crayon-colored headlights like everyone else on this site. Kudos, good sir.

as I said in my reply ( i was post #2 in this thread )

For visibility, 3000k 6000k has LESS useable light .... (visible light gets less as temp(k) goes higher)
Projectdna's graph confirms this. 3000k is what you want.

Yes, it's sad to see so many people fall prey to the "crystal blue, ice white, diamond sparkle, intense blue hue" type lights.

It's XenonDepot's graph, hence the watermark. I'm sure a lot of you guys have, but if you want even more info, that this sit doesn't provide, click the link in my sig.

Cheers!

anyone have the 3000k fog hid kit? does the output looks deep yellow or is it light yellow? Mine has a very light yellow color output to it. I don't have the vinyl yellow on the fog lens overlay. Do you guys know if i put it on the output of the hid will be more yellow? Thanks

thank you, though i take no credit for any of the info provided. this was simply available through a simple google search (see? search IS your best friend) and what i've learned during my time in this community.

also, so everyone knows, CL also has a lighting section:

+1 for 3000k - if you're going for the most light output.

i personally chose 6000k for my HID fog kit, only to have that color/light output mix. i just hope four_o_two doesn't think my 6000k HID fogs are crayon-colored lights.

3000k hid fog kits should have the same color as 3000k halogens, but with greater light output. given the same color temperature, HID > halogen, in terms of light output.

Whoa this is nice, almost like a science project. Thanks for the graph of color output!

Most of the post in the Lighting thread mainly for look questions, not much about visibility or fogy questions.

Thanks again for confirming the 3k!

Happy Holiday!!

thanks projectdna,

how can i make the output more yellow looking? Do you think an aerotech film over the foglights would give it a more yellowish output? or should i go with 2500k hid bulbs?

2500K/3000K will give you all the yellow you need. No need to put yellow overlays. If anything, they'll reduce output. I like to leave the front nice and clean and not "noisy" with those colored overlays. Looks tacky. No point in putting an overlay when you actually have a bulb that outputs in the color of the overlay... nahmean?

6K looks way better in my opinion. You got a lexus, not a riced out Honda...keep it classy.
