Ok, so they prob reused spark plugs.

Do you know if it's new or used.. does it come with additional warranty? I plan to ask my service guy these questions via an email but I'm going to leave him alone for a couple weeks as I don't want to be annoying.

here's the RO

They didn't replace your spark plugs.

As for the warranty, it would not be extended (unless you were within 90 days of it ending, in which case it would be minimum 90 days).

Ah, bummer. Well I guess I'll hope this one doesn't end up having premature scratches all over cyl #3.

Nope, but I do work in parts at a Toyota dealership that used to be a Lexus dealership.

Autox250 -- I'm looking forward to seeing your boroscope pictures!! To date, and I think I've read every 4GR-FSE carbon buildup thread on the internet -- I've never actually seen a picture of carbon buildup on an IS250.

the pistons are almost spotless, the valves not so much.... I will keep a close eye on how long it lasts since the problem is in the valves in the first place.

the last pictures of the piston dome are 1) the etching with the wrist pin size & 2) the wedge where the injector fires on. Note that all that buildup is still after I filled those ports w/ top engine clean and let them sit and soak in it for about 1/2 hour on a hot engine.

Wow, these pictures are what gas stations and dealers advertise..?

What is the best way to clean these?

The pictures actually look pretty good. I've seen a lot worse. There's nothing in those pictures I'd call alarming. I've seen intakes so coked up it was a marvel the engine ran at all, but it was carbureted so it won't have the same problems with driveability an injected engine will.

All in all, I'd say your clean up did a pretty impressive job (without before pics anyway...).

Nothing. It's a design flaw in the direct injection system. I still don't understand how changing the piston rings will solve the issue though.

My dealer told me today that my car was eligible for the TSB, but I actually had to have rough idle issues before they can do the fix. Any way to precipitate symptoms?

last time i was at the dealer i explained to my service advisor that a couple times my car had a rough idle when at a stoplight. He said just to get the fuel injectors cleaned. they said they could do the service. I guess i got shorthanded as I had to pay for it.

Less blowby = less carbon buildup. New rings combined with cleaning existing carbon deposits should get the engine running the way it was, and help prevent buildup from happening as fast (due to less blowby/oil consumption).

Dealer called today and they are going to do the piston ring fix. I was a bit leery of this as the noise was minimal but they said it would only get worse. Will post when I get the car back.
Got the car back today. They replaced the pistons and rings. Noise is gone! Unfortunately, the service writer didn't really know how bad the carbon build up was, and I couldn't speak to the tech who worked on it, but I'm assuming that was the problem as it fixed the rattling/knocking from the engine.
