Default Your thoughts on buying used from an independent dealer?

I see some good deals on IS's from small independent dealers like "Joes" auto sales. Has anyone ever bought from a place like that? I definitely dont trust those places and would rather go to a private seller who has all the maintanance records. Or CPO from the dealer with the warrenty. But ill also be paying another 2-3k. What are your thoughts?

If you can track the service and accident history your probably OK. These are dependable cars that don't break often.

However, if I had the choice to pick up a CPO for a similar or close price I'd go for it. 3yrs up to 100Kmiles, it's worth the couple of extra bucks.

what most independent dealers will do is allow you to borrow the car and take it to the lexus dealer to get it checked out(which will most likely cost you a fee of course). if they give you the okay, you could always buy it from the independent dealer, and then get an extended warranty through the lexus dealership.

eh its usually hit or miss. cpos that are on those lots are there for a reason. lexus has first dibs on the cpos and what they dont want go some where else.

also im pretty sure it cant be cpo unless its sold on a lexus lot

I bought my 06 IS350 last year from an independent dealer. Before purchasing I checked the car fax for accidents then pulled the service history for the car. Everything seemed well maintained but I still went ahead and purchased a warranty (not thru lexus due to mileage) that will cover anything major. Even with the extra for the warranty I paid about 5k less then what I was seeing comparable CPO cars go for. So far so good, no issues. I've put close to 10k miles on the car since last august and have loved every mile of it.

I was wondering the same thing. But I bought my 93 GS300 from an independent dealer...with 107k miles on it at the time back in 2003. I sold it in 2007 with 193k miles...no major issues with it. Just did the timing belt and other normal tune up stuff. It really is hit or miss. There's an 06 IS350 here in town loaded up...for 24k with LOW LOW miles. But it's at an indepedent place...

yea i know i can check the car fax for accidents and if the car was stolen. Where can I get service history? If I call any lexus and give them the vin would they be able to pull that up even if the car was never serviced there? My main concern is someone kicking back the milage. And of course I want to make sure the person who owned it before me took care of it.

Oh and how much did you buy yours for and with how many miles on it?

i think everyone nailed it on the head. just ask the independent dealer if you can take the car to a lexus dealership to have it inspected
