One of the posts that indicated that the IS is faster because G weights 100 pounds more make no sense. Ill take 28HP with extra 100 pounds any day.

The IS is faster not only because it weighs less, but more importantly because it has a final drive ratio of 4.08.

What is the final drive axle ratio for the g37 coupe? 3.36

That's...a big BIG difference, much bigger than a measly 28 HP. The lighter weight is only an added benefit - it's not the main reason why the IS is faster.

I'll take a final drive ratio of 4.08 over 3.36 all day everyday. It maximizes performance at the lower end (0 to 60, quarter mile, lower MPH rolls from 40MPH or 60 MPH). So what does it take away?

Well, if you did a 130 MPH to 150 MPH roll, the g37 would probably win. That's the "downside" of the gearing in the IS350, you're not going to win any 130 MPH rolls.

But you have to ask yourself, do you...care about 130 MPH rolls? When on earth will that ever be relevant/practical in everyday driving, or even on the track? It won't.

It makes sense to take away from such ludicrously unrealistic performance and "put those eggs" into lower end, practical performance.

There's nothing magical about the gear ratios in the IS350, they aren't miraculous in that they spell out better performance across the board, that would just be silly.

Instead, having such a gear ratio takes away from ultra high unrealistic performance and gives a boost to lower end performance.

For one, it makes that extra hp at 7000 rpms... the IS makes peak hp at 6400... but an even bigger deal... the heavier G only makes 269 ft-lbs of torque (and at 5200 rpms) the IS makes 277 ft-lbs and at 4800...

hp sells cars, torque wins races.

(and yeah, the weight and gearing help too :P)

^+1

There are actually quite a few +07^ G owners aware of this problem, so at least one of them has swapped out their final drive with that of a some light nissan truck. It was a direct replacement and gave him 4.10 gears.

He was putting down good numbers after that. I think he did 13.2's or something like that.

A slight advantage in a straight line only matters to people who only drive in straight lines.

My 06 IS350 was just turned in off lease, and I decided to go for a 2010 G37S. The G feels faster, but I'll defer to the experts on that. What I can tell you definitively is that the G is a heck of a lot more fun to drive, the seats blow the IS away, and it is very planted in the corners. The steering feels more communicative than the IS, the brakes are amazing, and the car seems oriented to the driver.

I can also say for sure that driving fast is effortless in the G. The G seems to get to 120+ fast and without losing its breath. I always felt on the edge of death if I tried this in my IS350. Maybe there was something wrong with mine.

I loved looking at my IS, and I love driving my G. Just a totally subjective opinion from a recent owner of both cars...

I've raced stock G37s from the dig, 20mph + 50mph roll and was able to walk away everytime. Sorry but the IS 350 is quicker everywhere.

i agree MV350! having test driven all three cars prior, the 350 from a performance/luxury blend is top notch when comparing these three. i like the lines of the g35 (my cousin actually chose this over a new g37). ive noticed a lot more modified g's compared to the ISx50, so maybe that contributed to my cousin choosing a g. personally, i like four doors, considering family is always wanting to get in freely, as opposed to moving the seat just to squeeze into the backseat.
