Default AWD Slash guards

Hey guys..awhile back during the winter a piece of my splash guard under the car got caught on some ice and snow, broke off and was just dangling. I figured its just plastic so i cut it off. When i cut it off it was this square piece that had what looks like a piece of cushion on the inside and on the outside says "lexus AWD." Looked kinda important. Either way i just left it to the side. But today i opened up my hood and noticed some dirty stuff on the side where that plastic piece was on the engine covers. Looking down you could see all the way down to the floor. So im guessing water and everything can splash up to the radiator and everything. Is this going to be much of a problem? or was that plastic there just to keep things clean?
