Default Does sport mode do anything? IS350

Besides let me use the paddle shifters? Does it alter the timing like the power button? I remember someone mentioned Drive is actually better for acceleration than Sport mode. And in the FAQ someone states that normal not power is the best selection if your simply going to nail the throttle. So what is the formula for maximum acceleration?
Thanks

Sport mode only allows you to control the gear you want the trans in. The power mode is what changes the shift pattern on the trans. Things like what rpm the trans up/down shift. In the power mode the trans shifts at a couple hundred rpm sooner.

It's kind of weird Power mode feels really fast but in fact it was just doing faster gear shifts.

I don't think extensive tests have been done on how power mode affects performance.

I think I've seen one test done. That just isn't sufficient for me.

The car feels like it accelerates faster from a roll in power mode versus normal mode. Obviously that doesn't mean that's actually the case, and it's more than likely a matter of perception due to faster shifts, but I'd like to see more, reproducible tests done to test the effects of power mode on performance.

its been tested that in normal mode, our car accelerates the fastest. Power mode is more for roads with lots of turning and such, due to power mode actually holds the gear for you instead of constantly upshifting or downshifting.

Yes but how many tests? I was under the impression that it was just one guy who did a single test.

It's hard to make conclusions from a sample size of n=1. I'd rather have multiple people doing multiple runs to see if the results are reproducible.

IIRC he was actually datalogging the car at the time.

But that post is in a 7 page thread where others confirm the results, including those who did a fair # of 1/4 mile runs and always got better results in Normal mode than Power.

For those wanting to know what power mode DOES do, see here:

As to SPORT mode- nope, useless. Gernby (in that same 7 page thread) tested putting the car in S mode/6 then repeating his tests and he got the same results as when the car was in D.

I found this out way back in the day when i drove my IS. I realized that the 2 times I had gone to the drag strip (and the DA was pretty much the same as previous sessions) I was running damn near .10 to .20 faster. Why?? Because i had forgot to push my ect/power button, and the results were better. I called caymandiver and he tried leaving it off the next few times he went to the strip. His results were the same. The IS is faster without using ect/pwr.

Like gernby's graph shows, it holds out on the shift points longer.

damn this was a long time ago, i just re read some of that thread.

i think from stand still Normal is better

but Sport mode makes u "feel" faster cuz it holds the gears longer when u back off, so when go back on the throttle theres instant power

PWR makes the transmission more responsive (up shifting and holding gears longer to downshift). I don't see how that would physically make the car faster but it may make it feel faster. I usually crank PWR mode when I am in a hurry because the tranny hesitates less.

This! And I tested the PWR mode myself on my local 1/8th mile drag strip and it lead to very slightly slower times because the trans shifted earlier in the powerband that Normal.
