"Turning it completely off, by holding down the Traction Control button on the right side of the steering wheel for three seconds, simply tells the transmission to keep itself in the next higher gear at all times (in “D“ mode), again to prevent wheel spin. The electronic nanny controls do their best to prevent unruly behavior."
I turned off VSC and trac, set the display to show what gear the trans was in and their statement about the "higher gear" not seem to hold up. Any thoughts?

First, whomever the OP is quoting has no idea what they're talking about. The TC/VSC button has nothing to do with gear selection like that.
Second, the 2IS doesn't allow manual shifting. The only thing "S" mode does compared to D mode is permit the driver to select a maximum gear the car is allowed to use. Beyond that it remains a 100% automatic transmission. The top-gear-limit feature can sometimes fool someone who doesn't understand what the car is really doing into thinking they are shifting it but they are not.

[QUOTE=brociouz;5464425]This post confuses me - can you rephrase? My first thought is whomever you quoted doesn't know what they're talking about.
According to Autoguide (using a 2010 IS350), you can not completely bi-pass the traction/VSC control, the car will work behind the scenes to keep you from doing something stupid like spinning the rear wheels.
I thought it was a curious statement and wanted to see if indeed the trans would not shift into 1st with the VSC and trac turned off. According to my display the transmission shifts as usual.

That is correct. ABS is part of VDIM and VDIM cannot be disabled. Only part of VDIM can be disabled and that's TRC and VSC. Neither, have anything to do with transmission shift patterns.
