sounds like the owner couldn't keep up with his payment so he decided to have one last joy ride in his lex until the repo man comes, am i close? didn't bother to read every single post but this is definitely interesting.

From what tow truck drivers have told me that is the correct way to do it. When I had to move my father inlaw totaled Xterra to my parents house the driver told me he could not tow it with the front lifted up. He said doing so even with the trany in neutral would screw up the automatic trany. He did tell me if the car was stick it would not be a problem.

You don't want to tow with the drive wheels on the ground. Even in neutral the output shaft is still connected inside and with no fluid moving around you can and will chew up the gears. If you disconnected the drive shaft you would be fine to tow it then.

Obviously the car is not cared for, the towing is just another sign of abuse. So this car will be auctioned off and later end up (after some marginal repairs) on some non-Lexus used car lot.

Precisely why I have never (and will never) purchase a used vehicle. And, if for some reason I was forced into such a situation, I'd only purchase "certified pre-owned" from Lexus dealers, or from private party individuals that I knew personally.

Yes. My very selective used car purchases are only CPO and/or from family members.
