Default $498 for 30,000 Mile Servicing??

I took my 08 IS 250 in yesterday for an oil change and warranty recall and I was told my car is due for the 30,000 mile servicing at a cost of $498. It included tire balance and rotation, oil, air filter change, and I forgot what other stuff it included. Is it me, or is that price just insanely high?? I passed on it for now and just got the oil change....

Take a good look at what you would be paying for! Save the $500 and do it yourself.

get the air filters from sewell and DIY..... the only thing you'll needa do is the brake flush and the oil change.... other than that... you can DIY... tire rotation is not do-able if you've got the 18" wheels...

Never, ever, ask for the "x miles" service.

That doubles the price compared to just getting the specific things you need done.

At 30k miles that would be: Oil change, brake fluid change, air/cabin filter changes.

The filter changes you can do yourself, in about 5 minutes total.

So get a price on an oil change (should be around $50 from a dealer) and a brake fluid change (should be around 100-150 from a dealer).

Look, you just saved $300-350 and got the SAME EXACT SERVICE!

(same goes for every other "x miles" service)

Thanks. My car is at the dealer now for the oil change and to fix some rattling noises. Should I call them up to get the brake fluid changed or do you think I can get that done cheaper elsewhere? Also, could somebody explain to me why the brake fluid needs to be changed at 30,000 miles? Thanks

30k service items per Lexus manual. You should at least do all maintenance parts except inspection items. Most people here recommend do it yourself this and that but that's a lot of work. Especially if you're not grease monkey type like myself or no garage space.

That's about right for a dealer. 30K inspection for our RX was about $550. Just do some of these things yourself to save yourself some money or take the car to an independent shop you trust.

Brake fluid absorbs water over time. This lowers its boiling point and cna cause a serious failure in an emergency stop situation.

brake fluid should be changed every 2 years, regardless of mileage honestly, but 30k is when Lexus expects you'll have had it for 2 years.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this, so I'm going to go ahead and ask here since this thread is about maintenance, but does anyone here know when we need to replace the IS' drive belt? I actually had never even heard mention of this until I saw it on the Sewell parts website:

http://is.sewellparts.com/accessorie...-2007-283.html

I assume that this is the belt that drives some accessories (maybe AC compressor, alternator, etc?), but I guess I just assumed there was a chain that did that or something, because again, I don't remember hearing about maintaining the drive belt anywhere.

Pretty sure the early models don't use chains only the old school rubber timing belts. I don't recall even replacing mine yet and I've had my car since March 2006. I'm sitting at almost 50k miles. Don't quote me, but I'd say 60-80k is the standard for most cars to be on the safe side, but I've seen others that don't require it until 100k. Someone with greater knowledge throw your 2cents in lol.

Almost everyone should be able to change the two filters themselves, so the 30k service is just the oil change and brake fluid. Make sure you get someone competent to do the brake fluid change. You want all of the fluid changed and no air in the system.

My Harley is about $350 for the 10k & 30k. I think I get more for my money than what Lexus is bending us over for.... LOL!
