It changes transmission behavior... and only in ways that might be useful in on/off throttle driving.
Full details of what it does are here:

The reason "normal" is faster in a floor-it situation is that the actual shift points are higher in normal mode (as proven by datalogging several runs of each by Gernby, that data is here

I just wanna comment since I had an E46 M3 before I got my IS350. I'm not that good of a driver but having driven both cars, I thought my IS couldn't beat the M3 in any way. I know I might get flamed here since it's a Lexus forum but I'm just saying based on my experience. I love my IS though, and not a single day I regret getting it. Peace everybody.

I would put my money on you. You would have to be flawless in the M3 to keep with the IS350. I see it all of the time on the tracks. I ran a 13.70 in the 86-90 degree heat last week... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cpz4_Ooq-YA
Anyways, do it and post a video. I think we all would be interested to see who will win. I am pretty sure it will be you. Have you raced before?

perhaps you meant 2nd gear? 2nd gear runs from 37 to 60 MPH. I've also had a run in with an e46 m3 myself which I posted in the racing section a while back. Summary: technically I won from a dig, realistically it was a tie
