There are different kinds of 3M double sided tape, not all are suitable for what you want to do. I got the heavy duty type made specifically to attach cladding, fender attachments, etc to cars. Do a bit of research here and on 3M's site to narrow down your choices. I ordered mine off the bay from an automotive supplier. I don't know what strength they have at Walmart, but it's probably not the heavy duty type. It'll probably work, but I feel better with a product specifically designed for this type of use.

The stuff that was used on my rear lip (in addition to screws) was 3M VHB Double Sided tape:

I used the kind with the plain red tape liner. Much stronger than anything from Wal-Mart and Home Depot. I ordered this stuff off the internet.
