Thanks. Polyurethane definately explains the soft outer texture. Almost makes one wonder why they don't just make the entire seat out of it I guess leather is still a selling point, even if it's really only leather underneath. I'm just resisting using the term "pleather" in this thread. Oops.

pleather is what you find in the bmw "leatherette"
lexus leather is buttery soft because it's real leather. you can tell if it's real leather or not if you press a finger into it. if it wrinkles it's real. if it just makes a dent without wrinkles around it, it's pleather.

The last time I looked at the 3-series (shortly before buying my IS), when I built a car using the website it was showing leather was now a free upgrade. A couple of years ago when I configged one it was maybe an $1000 option or so. Maybe nobody was buying the leatherette and it became cheaper from a manufacturing perspective to have only one option.
