Get the ones that are 100% transparent with no letters, numbers, graphics, markings, or symbols on them. Let the factory finish be what shines the most. ; )

To me, decals are the ultimate form of self expression you can do to your car. Just like bumper stickers for me. You will get many who will like it, and many more who dislike it (especially people who are not that into cars will just think its too much).
Having said that, I am personally going to be putting one under my third brake light. Another possibly on the top left of my rear windshield. I'll be reppin the GS Warriors even though they suck.
If you are into the whole stance thing, check out stancenation.com for their decals. To me they only look great on cars that are heavily modded. Same goes for my opinion on cars with aftermarket brand decals all over their car.
Edit: btw heartmyis has some nice clean decals on her front and back windshields.

While on topic, I think stickers peaked in the 90's. Then morphed over to Sunday soccer players putting a huge Nike swoosh on the back window and LA gangsters putting jumbo "Raiders" stickers on their back window. Also tacky are the, "In loving memory of..." stickers on many inner city SUV's and worn out Honda Accords. It does not get any cheesier than that.
Now there's a history of stickers practices you may not have thought about.

Strange how people pay $ to put stickers on their cars... and other people get paid to have stickers put on their cars.
It depends what kind of stickers... if you are talking about aftermarket brands like Greddy, HKS, PIAA... then it just screams rice... Unless you have been sponsored.
If it is just a simple sticker that says CAL Alumni then that should be fine. Nothing wrong with a lil loyalty to your school.
