So...maybe its a loose nut behind the wheel?
Apparently 74 of 75 'sudden acceleration issues' were related to the loose nut behind the wheel. Who want's to bet where this story will be on the news?

So, 74 out of 75 incidents "...were a result of driver error -- specifically, drivers were mistaking the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal."
And, the lone 1 out of 75 incident? It wasn't driver error, per se, it was the result of improperly positioned floormats.
Really, though, tell me something I didn't already know. I suppose I'm still glad that our cars now have a brake override feature for additional safety (as per recall), but clearly such a feature was never even necessary for a car in which floor mats were installed correctly.
I think the good news from all of this bad press is that it's forcing Toyota to further improve safety measures faster than usual on already safe vehicles for the sole purpose of avoiding further bad press. Prototypical example of the phrase "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger."

Least surprising result....ever.
This conclusion was already obvious when you looked at how the accidents skewed to old people.
Exact same thing happened to Audi back in the 1980s... crazy OMG THE CAR IS DEADLY reports trashed the companies image... Big news report showing the problem...
Then after the investigations finished they discovered:
News report was faked
Virtually every actual accident was a result of driver error
Sound familiar?

I think there's yet another subcategory in all of this - people who willfully "mistaken" the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal and crash on purpose for the sole reason of cashing in via law suit when there is still bad press surrounding Toyota.
There was a terrific example of this somewhere in Car Chat where a woman's statements were thoroughly inconsistent and suggested that she faked the entire debacle for the sole purpose of making news, which in turn tends to elevate the status and vigor of the lawsuit she almost certainly filed. Here's her story -

Not Toyota - sure - but what better time to fake a case of sudden acceleration than now, right?
