I hit a raccoon on my way home from the theatre today, Raccoon lost but not before leaving a few scars. Bumber is cracked and the wheel well lining is loose on the driver side, a few of the panels under the bumper are a bit mangled as well. My deductible is $500 and I'm wondering if I should go through insurance or if the cost will come in at under $500. I've never done any body work to my IS so i have no idea how much something like this costs.
Yep, about $800-$1,000....... you could try and do it by buying the front bumper off ebay and taking it to a body shop to get painted for around $400, but I'd just claim it... animals are "act of god" and dont cause your rates to go up or anything negative
I got a quote from Lexus dealer actually for my front bumper. To repair (really small ding without cracks and paint damage): $740, new bumper: $840ish.
Yeah, I just got off the phone with my insurance and learned that this falls under comprehensive coverage and my deductable is only $250, not $500 as I previouly thought.

Good for you, definitely put it through your insurance.
That is pretty crazy! I felt my front and rear wheels go over it so no chance of any surprises for me and I'm pretty sure its dead, though didn't stop to check.
I just got back from dropping her off at the body shop. The estimate that my insurance adjuster gave was just north of $1300. Got a Mazda 3 rental and I cannot wait to get my car back!
To verify that the raccoon is dead, look for vultures. I've seen them pick apart a dead raccoon on the road in my area.
I drove back down the street this morning, about 12 hours after the incident and found no signs at all of the raccoon. There were about 4 or 5 of them last night on the opposite side of the road when one of them decided to cross just as I was passing by. I'm guessing the remaining ones saw an opportunity and cannibalized their buddy.
