This is a decision purely up to you. You know what you like most, you know what is most practical for your needs, and you know how your own children are. They are both great vehicles, but you have to meet your needs as best as you know how to.

How long do you plan on keeping the car for? Something to think about.
how old are your kids? If under 7. I would buy the IS. If over 7, I would buy the RX.
If you live in LA, west LA specifically. IS for sure, if they are under 7. You need the maneuverability to navigate asshats on the 405 and 10 for sure.

I have a 2006 IS 350 and my wife has a 2010 RX 350. I prefer my car, she prefers her's. For your needs, I would suggest the RX. While I prefer my IS, I still very much enjoy driving the RX. Different vehicles to be sure, but both are very nice. Good luck.
