Check for any frame damage and get it checked out at an actual BMW dealer. I know some of them charge an arm and a leg, but they'll know the car best. You'll want to know everything that's wrong with it, especially if the replacement parts are steep. From personal experience in my E36 M3, they're actually very easy to work on (save the Vanos), but for stuff that acutally does tend to fail, you can do 95% of the work yourself. There's a lot of really great resources online for the cars, including the E46 M3. If you can do the work yourself and you're not intimidated by that sort of thing, buy the car. Follow your dreams lol! But really, do it.

GUYS I sold my 2006 IS350 aka Black Stallion. I am truely going to miss it My first luxury sedan, it totally opened the doors me for into luxury cars. Its been gone for 24hrs and I miss having it in the garage. the beautiful sweeping needles, the plush interior, the fast windows, the 13 speakers! the push button start! I always have a strong attachment for the things I love, especially since I care for them and treat them as if they're my kids. corny right?
I just hope the new owner will take care of it as well as I did. perhaps i'll see it around since he is just 10 miles north of me.
But CL has been a great place! What a friendly community. I sold the buyer to sign up immediatly for this forum after he gets home.
But I'm not done with Lexus yet...I see either the GX450 or GS430 in the future line up cheers!
