215/45r17 winter tires
i just bought a set of 215/45r17 michelin xice xi2 winter tires and noticed that tirerack.com recommends 215/50r17 for the IS awd
would 45 and 50 make a noticeable difference? would it be unsafe?

Just a tad bit smaller sidewall. You might feel the road a bit, but not a big deal.
