I usually fill up when I have a 1/4 of a tank left. I like keeping liquid in there to keep my fuel pump cool and lubricated. I heard that in the winter you should fill up at half to keep moisture from forming inside the gas tank.. not sure if its true or not.
This hasn't actually been an issue on Toyota cars since the mid/late 90s due to the small reservoir design the pump sits in.
I still wouldn't run it dry or anything, but you're not causing harm running it till the fuel light comes on.
i tend to fill it nearing the 1/4 mark. there's no real right or wrong on when to fill up, just personal preference. also, gas prices, distance needed to travel to destination, and location tend to make my decision on whether to fill up or not.
I always keep my gas between empty and 1/8th full so I usually end up refueling 3-4 times a week. Less gas weight = moar speed! j/k, fill up whenever you want to. The design of the 2IS fuel pump is sophisticated enough that running on empty shouldn't be an issue.
Thought I was the only one who did this. I too typically keep my fuel pump in the 1/3 - 1/8 filled range because I like the way the car behaves with that
~100 lbs weight savings (in gas). The car noticeably feels more sprightly.
