I agree. Even though the cops said they couldn't do anything since the OP left the scene, I think the license plate is important so I would see why the OP followed the truck.

wtf.. is it only in IL when cops start a manhunt if someone runs off?
I got hit in my previous car and the degenerate drove off, when cops showed up, they escalated the issue right away, and driver was caught about 10 minutes later hiding in a parking lot a few miles down the road.
