no, theres a 1k check up. if theres any "metal shavings" trust me the car's company would flush it for you before you even take it off the lot. is all myth, and for the OP.. 5k is good enough. anything fewer is a waste of oil PERIOD. 5k is a bit soon as it is.. but the manual does say 5k. so just roll with it.

Do you guys actually go for maintenance every 6 months even if you don't hit the next 5000 mile mark?

I read the maintenance schedule the other day and it says every 6 months or 5000 miles, which ever comes first. It seems like I always hear about the 5000 mile mark a lot more than the 6 months.

Most modern engines, like what Lexus uses, do not need a 1k oil change. This is old-fashion thinking. Technology and manufacturing have made great progressions that change how we take car of our cars. The 1k oil change is a complete waste of time and money. Follow what it says in your manual.

Unless your dealer has his own special offerings, the only free oil change is the 5k visit. Wait until then and keep your car away from the dealership as much as possible.

According to my manual (2011 IS250), the 5000 mile and 10,000 mile services are complimentary. Also, programming of the LPS features is performed once at no charge, provided you obtain the service at the six-month/5,000-mile scheduled maintenance service.

Most of the things done at 5,000 miles are inspections and tire rotation. But since I have different size tires, they don't need to rotate the tires. The oil (synthetic) isn't even changed until the 10,000 mile service.

if you drive short distance (engine didnt even warmed up) then you should do it every 6 months...otherwise go for 5k

Hmm... I guess it depends on timing and dealership?

I bought mine from Stevens Creek Lexus in June 2010. The dealer told me I also get 2 free oil changes. I don't trust salespeople so I checked it out, and it's on the window sticker of my car (2 Complimentary Oil Changes).

Yeah, I have a feeling I might drive less than 5000k every six months.

My maintenance book and my sales representative told me I get the 1000 miles / 30 days checkup free and then I get the 5000 miles / 6 months maintenance for free too.

Looks like Lexus added a second free oil change with the 2010 model year. Slipped right by us here at CL. No mention of it until now. (cool!)

That would also explain why so many local dealers are advertising "free 2/year/24k" servicing. Another sleazy way of trying to make it look like the dealer is giving you something free when in fact it's Lexus behind it and available at any dealer. (old school tactics = not so cool!)

Hmmm. My 2011 IS350 maintenance manual is different than the 2011 IS250 one. I checked the hardcopy book I have and the one online. It looks like I only get the 30 days / 1000 miles and the 6 months / 5000 miles visits for free. I looked on the next page and it doesn't continue with "Complimentary Third..." or anything like that.

Complimentary First
Scheduled Maintenance
Service: 30 Days or
1,000 Miles
Lexus provides your first scheduled
maintenance service at no charge.
The service is performed at 30 days
or 1,000 miles, whichever occurs first,
and includes the items listed in the
chart on the next page. To obtain this
complimentary service, contact your
Lexus dealership.

Complimentary Second
Scheduled Maintenance
Service: Six Months or
5,000 Miles
Lexus also provides your second
scheduled maintenance service at no
charge. The service is performed at
six months or 5,000 miles, whichever
occurs first, and includes the items
listed in the chart on page 48. To
obtain this complimentary service,
contact your Lexus dealership.

Do you have synthetic oil or regular dino oil? That could be the difference. I have synthetic...
