Default Dealer vs Tire Shop w/ TPMS programming

I have winter wheels w/ Snows for my IS. The Wheels have a their own TPMS sensors. So I wanted to program my IS for the 2nd set of wheels.

I only asked their programming charge, I did not ask for putting on the snows. I assume that would be extra.

I called Lexus to check on the charge. The quote was for $120 for 1 hour to program the car.

I called Toyota to compare. The quotes $98 for the same service.

I called the tire shop. The local Town Fair Tire putting on the snows - NO CHARGE. Programming the 2nd set of sensors $20. they gave me a courtesy though, I've ben keeping them busy lately.

So look before you jump.

BTW, as to the 1 hr to program.

I watched them at Town Fair as they did it.
I did not need to give them the sensor numbers (which I had)
They held their sensor to each wheel. it took the ID Reading from each wheel.
He then plugged into the on board computer and downloaded the IDs.
total time 10 minutes.

Many tire shops and dealers don't have the fancy TPMS programmer (Bartech Tech400) that permits this. If the dealer or shop doesn't have one and does the programming using their Techstream scan tool they will need the sensor numbers.

every dealer is different. some wont even charge you. most usually charge and hour just in case they run into any problems

EJC - What town fair tire you go to in CT? I have been wanting to get this done for a while. Also, where did you get your second set of TPMS from?

This was in West Hartford.

Check your manual to make sure the car is set on 2nd set of wheels or you will over-write the oem wheel settings. Not a big deal though.

the 2nd set of sensors are a long story, but I got them from Lexus gratis.

You should be able to get the part number from lexus parts and you can get the parts on E-bay for ~$50@

i got my tmps programed at a local discount tire shop for free. compared the dealership that wanted 120 bucks. i recommend anyone who is looking to program their tires to call around local tire shops to see if they have the equipment to get it done and take it there instead

vi3t80y your rims are compatible. I dont think it matters from 06-10. They should still work when program.
