Black Ice in Atlanta...quick123's down for the count
Wednesday, December 15th 2010, is a day that my poor Lexus will never forget. The Atlanta metro area was caught off guard, without any warning from the National Weather Service, that a little rain would quickly turn into layers of ice on the roads. Over 1000 accidents were reported, and sadly I was one of them.
I was driving, with my wife sitting shotgun, and we were just leaving our apartment to meet some friends for dinner. We were about 100 feet out of the parking deck when we went around a slight left curve, and hit a huge patch of black ice. The car simply slid, the back end kicked out, and the right rear wheel smacked into a curb. We were fine, seatbelts on and we were only going about 20-30mph, but man did the wheel look f-ed.
The car is now at my collision department, and parts have been ordered. The rear sub-frame took all the impact, so mainly chassis components will be replaced (knuckle, bearing, control arms, axle, etc...). State Farm has been great, and I will update with more pictures throughout the repair. Initial estimate is $4,820 with more to add once they start replacing parts, amazing damage from just a curb...
Here are some quick pictures I took when we loaded the Lexus onto the flat bed...saddest sight ever...

^^ Thanks guys...no injuries is definitely the most important thing.
I think we are lucky only the wheel hit the curb too, but I am shocked at how much got damaged due to the force of impact to the wheel...once the car gets broken down in the body shop, I will update with some pics and parts that needed to get replaced...

Sad to hear, hope everything comes out to be pretty minor
A bit of shameless plug here, I've had 2-3 run ins with black ice before, and once at highway speeds where the car skidded for a split second, thankfully the AWD gave me grip with at least 1 wheel and the car caught itself without breaking a sweat.

At least your wife wasn't hurt...(you've got hurt feelings). This same thing happened to me except I was going 45MPH when my then girlfriend told me to turn left suddenly and my back wheel struck the curb. It look ed WAY worse than yours. Your car will look so much better after you order that GFX kit from Sewell as your cars Christmas gift (and feel better too)!
